The Kidston Pumped Hydro Energy Storage (PHES) project in Queensland is a critical component of Australia’s transition to renewable energy. This innovative project repurposes a former gold mine into a large-scale energy storage facility, designed to generate, store, and dispatch power during peak demand periods.

Greenbuild Supply is proudly contributing to this groundbreaking project by supplying its high-quality, LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) conduit and conduit fittings. These components are essential for the electrical infrastructure, ensuring safety and sustainability. LSZH conduit pipes are known for their exceptional fire resistance, producing minimal smoke and zero toxic halogen gases in case of fire, making them ideal for safety-critical projects like Kidston PHES.
Excavation and Construction
The project involved the excavation of several shafts:
- Ventilation Shaft – 4.1m diameter, 243m deep
- Cable Shaft – 4.1m diameter, 252m deep
- Intake Shafts x 2 – 5m diameter, 244m deep
The general methodology included establishing the site, installing a pilot hole, attaching a cutterhead to ream the shaft, and then removing the cutterhead. Ensuring the verticality of the pilot hole was crucial, and state-of-the-art positioning and drilling equipment were used.
Impact and Future
The Kidston project is set to help Queensland meet its Renewable Energy Targets of 70% by 2032 and 80% by 2035. It is expected to produce enough electricity to power 143,000 homes for at least six hours and has a lifespan of at least 75 years. The project has also created approximately 400 direct jobs and is forecast to deliver AUS$343M in net public benefit.
